Squat toilets and broken showers: Members of Knesset find devastating living conditions in Ayalon prison

Following a debate which was organized by the Interior Committee in October 2020, MKs Miki Haimovich and Moshe Arbel visited the transit cells at Ayalon Prison. The scenes were appalling, and particularly outrageous given the Israeli Prison Service’s boasting during the debate of their investment and great concern for the welfare of the prisoners.

“The appearance of these cells is tough. Since they are non-permanent cells, they are physically in the worst condition. Mattresses are infested with bed bugs and the showers are broken. Prisoners are supposed to undergo two Covid-19 tests during two weeks here, but sometimes this is delayed, which means that people stay in these difficult conditions for a longer period,” Haimovich wrote following the visit.
