On 14 and 16 July 2008, the Pubic Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) took part in the "One Shekel Festival" ("Festival B'Shekel") events that took place in Tirat Ha'Carmel and Kiryat Malachi. PCATI participated in the festival in cooperation with the "Festival B'Shekel" organization that planned the events with the aim of bringing cultural programs to residents of the periphery in Israel.

PCATI manned a stand at each one of the events, distributed reports and other materials, and held discussions with a large number of participants many of whom signed on with us requesting to receive information regarding future PCATI events.
A large audience came to the events to see performances by the most popular musical groups and singers in Israel, dance companies and performances by youth and street theater groups. In between performances, the audience was given an opportunity to meet with PCATI's representatives.

The above activity is an integral part of PCATI's current focus of directly reaching out to the general public including the public in areas outside the major population centers of Israel. This follows PCATI's active participation in a seminar for student activists that was held in Dimona last May, meetings and study sessions with students, and our educational program in the field of cinema and human rights that was held in recent months at the "Kerem" institute in Jerusalem.
